Sound of silence

Walking along the path between the grain fields, I suddenly stop in my tracks. Right in front of me I see a casualty in the middle of the road. It’s a tiny shrew, her feet sticking up in the air. I roll a piece of foil from my pack of crackers and lift her up on it. Together we lay her to rest under some tall grass nearer to the field. Forever silent.
